Specialists in the design of high quality, well researched composite structures in particular with special experience in the field of fatigue and backed by an extensive materials R&D library for marine structures. AEL is world leader in the design and development of blades for tidal turbines.

AEL’s unique one stop shop offers the complete service from design through tooling, testing and manufacture so that responsibilities for each stage are clear.
Manufacturing facilities include a 3 axis NC router for tool making, large 10 x 3 x 2m 4 zone oven; NC materials cutting, laser placement system, full trace-ability and QA system.
Testing facilities include; in house process check testing, tensile testing, impact simulation, fatigue testing, materials moisture conditioning, creep testing, pressure testing up to 50 bar, up to 100T distributed static shear loading rig. In 2014 we will be establishing a fatigue testing facility for tidal blades and other large structures capable of applying up to 20MNm static bending moments and 10MNm cyclic bending moments for fatigue.

Approved to ISO 9001, company procedures & systems, originally developed for the light aviation industry are to the highest standards.

The company policy with regard to R&D is that all design must be underpinned by solid materials and other necessary approved design data. AEL has since 2006 spent in excess of £2M on R&D in support of the marine renewables / fatigue areas alone with data on dry and wet conditioned materials; static and fatigue now part of our extensive materials library.
