Alan Banks is the Lightweight Structures Supervisor within Advanced Engineering and Research at Ford Motor Company. He started work at Ford in 1983 and has worked in Chassis Engineering since 1985 – first as a draftsman and then as a D&R engineer before moving to Advanced Engineering in 2019. He joined the commercial vehicle team in 1994 full time working in a variety of Chassis component divisions before being made suspension supervisor in 2004. Since then he has overseen the Transit Custom and Transit 2 Tonne suspension development globally to achieve best in class vehicle dynamics and architecture. Alan is responsible for a team of 14 engineers working directly for him with a team of distributed global engineers ensuring regional aspects are covered under his leadership. He has led product development and launches all over the world and is currently based in the Commercial Vehicle Centre of Excellence in the Dunton Engineering Centre in the UK. He was the team leader on the Composite Lightweight Automotive Suspension System (CLASS) project which won the JEC World Automotive Application Innovation category in 2018 and has 8 patents to his name. Alan has a First Class Honours Degree and an MSc from the University of Bradford in the UK and is a Fellow and Chartered Engineer with the Institute of Engineering Technology.
