Using the America’s Cup venue as a backdrop, Volvo expanded on news of its continued sponsorship of the Volvo Ocean Race, sailing’s prestigious around-the-world competition, with notice of significant format, schedule and rules changes for the 2005/6 event.
The 2005-06 race will traverse the world’s oceans with six point-to-point legs and port stopovers, two shorter duration runs with pit stops, an ancillary points fund, and world-class boats constructed under new Volvo Ocean Race design rules.
While each mono-hull entry will be the same prescribed length and use a canting keel and bulb, carbon-fiber mast and limited sail inventory Volvo Ocean Race entrants will be able to select a one or two centerboard design and use one or two rudders. A ten-foot increase in length, over the original Volvo Ocean Race 60 hull design, is expected to result in faster, safer and more comfortable boats.
Volvo added to its Volvo Ocean Race rules and schedule news by announcing plans to host a completely new event in 2007. The Volvo Pacific Ocean Race will focus on Pacific waters and will feature the amended Volvo Ocean Race boat design, construction and crew rules. The Volvo Pacific Ocean Race will follow a competition plan that will take the race fleet from China to Japan and across the Pacific to San Francisco and San Diego, California.
