The 11th Asian-Australasian Conference on Composite Materials (ACCM-11), hosted by the University of Southern Queensland (USQ) in Cairns, Australia, 30 July-1 August, attracted a record number of 550 delegates from 34 countries, with the top delegate countries including China, Australia, Korea and Japan.

The conference was co-hosted by University of Sydney, Deakin University and Swinburne University.

USQ’s Centre for Future Materials (CFM) organised the three-day programme, which featured 27 themes across 12 parallel sessions and showcased five plenary and 30 keynote presentations.

The conference highlighted recent developments in areas such as 3D and 4D printing of functional composites, fire retardant composites, composites manufacturing sensor technologies, advanced automated manufacturing, repair, thermoelectric and battery composites.

“Composite materials research is the core strength of USQ’s CFM, with a significant track record and a strong research team delivering world-leading research,” CFM Director and ACCM-11 Co-Chair, Professor Peter Schubel, says. “USQ was proud to deliver ACCM-11 and sent over 40 delegates as session chairs, oral and poster presenters. USQ Professor Hao Wang and the CFM team delivered an exemplary conference programme with novel elements such as the Young Researchers Award and the Journal Session.”

Exhibitors included MTS, John Morris, Netzsch, ThermoFisher Scientific, JouleYacht, Wiley, Elsevier and JEC.

Recipients of the ACCM-11 Young Researcher Awards were Jeng Hun Lee (The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology), Anil Ravindran (RMIT) and Madhubhashitha Herath (University of Southern Queensland), while the Poster Awards went to Ping Song (North West Polytechnical University), Jian-Cheng Lai (Nanjing University), Hyun-Wook Park (KAIST) and Tingyu Liu (Ming Chi University of Technology).

A special Journal Session was run where the editors of Composite Sci and Tech, Composites Part A, Composites Part B, Composites Communications and Advanced Manufacturing: Polymer & Composites Science promoted their journals and highlighted new initiatives and future directions.

The Advanced Manufacturing: Polymer & Composites Science journal will publish a special issue for ACCM-11.

ACCM-12 will be hosted by Zhe Jiang University in China in 2020.
