Lamplas, already one of the largest composite manufacturers in the UK, is planning a major expansion into new markets as part of a long-term growth strategy.
Lamplas (Durham) Ltd currently operates from two sites, totalling more than 100,000 sq ft, in Derwentside and employs around 100 people. Turnover has increased from £4.8m to £5.2m in the current year, the workforce is growing steadily and the company is now strengthening its management team as it moves into new markets.
Lamplas has more than 35 years of experience designing and developing glass fibre components for the leisure market and is a leading supplier to the major caravan and holiday-home manufacturers.
n 2005 a substantial investment in new solid surface casting technology took the company into the designer kitchen and bathroom ware market. The technology enables it to produce granite-effect ware including sinks, shower screens and worktops at about one third of the cost of traditional cold cure acrylics.
“”We have built up substantial expertise and experience in the leisure vehicle market, successfully moved into domestic ware and now is the time to move forward again,”” said Operations Director Keith Siddle. “”We already have a presence in the construction, domestic and medical markets but intend to expand this considerably and move into other new areas, such as industrial equipment, as well.
“”The solid surface side of our business is growing fast and we are working with architects and companies on hotel interiors and supermarket check-outs as well as creating bespoke designs for domestic customers.””
Michael Gallagher has been appointed as Business Development Manager specifically to take the company into new markets in both areas of business. Joe O’ Brian, who has 20 years experience with Lamplas, has been appointed as Production Director as part of the company’s strategy to strengthen the management team.
Lamplas has recently developed a new moulding system that not only produces nine-metre caravan fronts with a much smoother finish but is also a chemically cleaner process for operatives.
“”It is vital that we remain innovative and our development team and designers are constantly developing new products to ensure we maintain our place as a UK leader,”” says Keith Siddle. “”We are pushing for continuous improvements in every area of our business. We have a highly committed team here – in sales, management and on the shop-floor – and we are highly optimistic about the potential of new markets.””
