Automotive Technology, a UK company which specialises in the sales and marketing of original equipment components for a variety of niche vehicle applications in the UK market, has expanded its product offer with higher volume components and new composites.
Automotive Technology is the UK agent for French company SORA Composites which has recently acquired a new business which has a high volume component manufacturing capability and also produces thermo-plastic composites.
Prior to this expansion Automotive Technology have been suppliers primarily to niche vehicle brands such as Aston Martin and Lotus but the SORA acquisition provides a new dimension with high volume capability such as complete tailgate assemblies e.g. Citroën and Renault, floor modules and sparewheel wells using the Sandwiform process, bumper beams, side impact bars, parcel shelves and inner door panels. The new SORA factory has injection moulding presses up to 2,300 tonnes. Not only can they manufacture large injection mouldings but also small or high volumes. This provides an opportunity to produce spare parts for manufacturers when their models reach the end of volume production.
The SORA addition in composites is particularly important because new European legislation dictates that 85 per cent of every vehicle must be recycled. This means that the thermoset manufacture of composites will be overtaken by thermo-plastic composites, which is a major form of composite production in the new SORA factory.
Peter Parrott, Managing Director, Automotive Technology, said: “These new areas of expansion at SORA Composites open the market for higher volumes and also the supply of end of production spares which manufacturers have a responsibility to supply for seven years and for some models up to 15 years. “At the same time, with the current global focus on the environment, recyclable thermoplastic components are essential in today’s automotive manufacturing industry.”
