Two JEC Awards for Institut fuer Verbundwerkstoffe

At the JEC Composites Show, the Institut fuer Verbundwerkstoffe received two innovation awards.

Together with its project partners KUKA, Bond Laminates, Jacob Composite, and the Department of Production Engineering and Plant Organization – FBK of the University of Kaiserslautern the institute received the innovation award in the category automation for the development of a flexible welding technique to join three-dimensional fibre polymer composites. This joining process enables the welding of fibre reinforced polymer composites with three-dimensional welding seams and aims at applications in the automotive industry. The technique is characterized by short process times, high variability regarding the join partners and the potential to carry out detachable weld joints.

For the development of a fully automated tape placement head to process continuously fiber reinforced thermoplastic tapes, operated at a 6-axle articulated robot, the institute and its project partner Airbus received the JEC innovation award in the category process. The tape placement head is assembled as modular system, ensuring a further expansion. Plane and multiple curved structures can be realized. The successful research work is continued in the framework of the current aviation research program in close co-operation with Airbus. The novel technology shall be applied to airplanes of the future, which will predominantly consist of carbon fibre reinforced polymers (CFRP).
