Toray Industries Inc, is setting up a Technology Centre in Penang, Malaysia as part of its strategy to strengthen its global competitiveness in the plastic resin business.
Toray hopes that by setting up a strategic technical base for plastics resin on a large scale and located at a notable growing market of the Asean region, it will able to meet the market needs and establish fast responsive technical service activity.
The centre was officially opened on the 21st March 2005 with industry professionals from Japan and Malaysia invited. The Centre will form part of it’s ABS1 resin manufacturing and sales subsidiary, Toray Plastics Malaysia (TPM).
TPM was incorporated in 1990, and is currently the only Japanese ABS manufacturer operating outside Japan and running at a capacity of 220,000 metric tons per year. TPM is producing ABS plastics resin under the brand name of TOYOLAC with the same quality as Toray’s Chiba Plant in Japan and supplying to all over the world mainly to China, Hong Kong and the ASEAN region. Currently more high value added product is being developed and added to its product range like the painting grade, flame retardant grade, heat resistant grade and glass fibre reinforced grade. At the same time the internal compounding product range is also being expanded to cater for a stronger competitive market.
The Technology Centre will be responsible to develop new products to meet the market needs and to improve on the productivity and quality by development of better production technology. It will also serve as an end user technical service centre. Besides equipment and facility for development of polymerization process and extrusion machine, it will also acquire injection moulding machines and various kinds of evaluation and analysis equipment for polymer property tests. Thus it is establishing itself to the maximum limit as a comprehensive technology development centre.
On Toray’s plastic resin business, it is establishing itself more by reforming its business structure and also aggressive investment through expansions like setting up of PBT resin polymerization process plant in Malaysia in 2006 and other reinforcement of it’s compounding facilities in China and Thailand. The setting up of this Technology Centre is also a part of its strategy to strengthen itself globally in research and technology development. Toray group will continue to build up its global operation to provide fast and precise response for the market needs and make its presence strongly felt as a major player of plastic resin business in Asia.
