Teijin Limited and Teijin Twaron BV are to expand production for their high-performance fibre Twaron in both plants in the Netherlands.
This expansion, which will result in a 20 percent increase of the total production volume of Twaron yarn and pulp, is the third major capacity increase since the take-over by Teijin of Twaron at the end of 2000.
The first step of the takeover project was completed in the second quarter 2003, which increased capacity by 50 percent. The second step was the expansion with a spinning line which will be completed in the third quarter of this year and which will increase capacity with 5-10 percent depending on product mix.
This project will start in March 2005 and additional yarn and pulp capacity will be available in the second half of 2006. The expansion will encompass monomer and polymer capacity in Delfzijl and spinning capacity in Emmen with the total investment amounting to approximately 140 million Euros, including de-bottlenecking on existing production lines.
The “”Niji”” expansion is Teijin’s response to serve continuously growing customer’s demand in traditional markets such as ballistics, rubber, optical fibre cables, friction, composite materials, ropes & pipes and to contribute to new product developments in the para-aramid markets like fire resistant mattresses, fibre reinforced plastic pipes, blast mitigation materials and fabrics for asphalt reinforcement.
This increasing demand in world markets amounts to an average of up to 10% per year in the various application areas.
Twaraon said that the fastest growth application areas are ballistics (ballistic vests, helmets and vehicle armours) and friction (e.g. automotive brake pads, gaskets and sealing). Other steady growing applications areas in which Twaron is used as a reinforcing material or protective material are rubber reinforcements (tyres, hoses and belts), cut resistant gloves, optical fibre cables, ropes & pipes, composite materials (compounds, blast mitigation, FRP boats) and civil engineering/geotextile.
Teijin’s Industrial Fibers Group is focusing on high-performance fibres to serve the growing demands of the market by a wide range of technical fibres:
Two para-aramid fibres: Twaron and Technora
A meta-aramid fibre: Teijinconex
Carbon fibre, Tenax and BESTFIGHT
Oxidized PAN fibre Pyromex
PEN(polyethylene naphtalate) fibre
