Teijin has broken ground on the new US carbon fibre production facility of its subsidiary Teijin Carbon Fibers (TCF).

The ceremony was held on 1 June at the TCF site in Greenwood, South Carolina.

Teijin reports that is aiming to further evolve its carbon fibre businesses under a long-term vision to reduce environmental footprint to satisfy tightening environmental regulations worldwide.

“We look forward to this new chapter of Teijin’s expansion in the US,” says Yukito Miyajima, President of TCF. “We are strengthening its global upstream-to-downstream carbon fibre business. In particular, we have been leveraging research and development to expand carbon fibre business in the aircraft and automotive fields. Throughout this process, we looked at multiple locations, but ultimately, with the support of Greenwood local and state government officials, we chose Greenwood as the ideal location for our new US carbon fibre facility.”

The TCF facility is expected to create some 220 jobs with US$600 million worth of investment around 2030. This is the largest initial capital investment that a company has ever created in Greenwood.

“South Carolina continues to make great strides in the manufacturing industry, and Teijin’s expansion and commitment to our state is proof that our hard work is paying off,” states Bobby Hitt, Secretary of Commerce, South Carolina. “We treasure our relationship with Teijin and look forward to industry success for years to come.”
