Spectra fiber has been selected for new aircraft armored cockpit doors being developed and sold by TIMCO and AIM Aviation Inc.

“”To minimize weight, we wanted a ballistic material that could be incorporated into our panel construction. Spectra fiber’s workability, coupled with its ability to absorb energy, made it the logical choice in our material selection process,”” said Rick Salanitri, TIMCO Vice President of Engineering.

“”Our test doors with Spectra fiber more than withstood extensive blunt-force testing, even after being shot with nearly 70 rounds from both .44 magnum and 9mm handguns,”” said Philip Fields, AIM Vice President of Sales and Marketing.

The TIMCO/AIM Aviation doors shall be developed for various aircraft models and marketed as “”kits”” that will include reinforced jambs, keyless entry and flight deck indication and control. The doors will be manufactured at AIM Aviation’s Renton, Washington facility. TIMCO and TIMCO Engineered Systems Inc., units of Aviation Sales Company, will develop the aircraft-specific applications and will obtain Supplemental Type Certificates for various aircraft through TIMCO’s Designated Alteration Station (DAS) authority. Armored cockpit doors were a key element in U.S. Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta’s recommended security measures in the wake of the September 11 attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
