In a second major A400M contract award this year, GKN Aerospace has been selected as the prime contractor supplying both metal and composite wing trailing edge subassemblies for Airbus Military’s new military strategic airlifter.
This contract is worth over $160m based on the current order book. When combined with the advanced composite wing spar contract, awarded to GKN Aerospace in March, the value of the company’s involvement on the A400M exceeds $1.0m per aircraft.
In fulfilling this contract, GKN Aerospace takes prime responsibility for the design, development and supply of all wing trailing edge subassembly packages, including the shroud box and so-called ‘outer falsework’, ribs and panels for the A400M wing trailing edge. The contract also covers the drawings for the trailing edge assembly installation.
The majority of the wing trailing edge engineering activity will take place with the existing A400M spar design and manufacturing work at a new facility on the Isle of Wight in the UK. This will be sited alongside the Company’s new Composite Research Centre, announced in July and due to commence operation in spring 2005. As prime contractor for this package of work, GKN Aerospace will also manage an international supply chain which involves manufacturing partnerships with Hampson Industries in the UK and CTRM in Malaysia.
This new contract continues GKN Aerospace’s track record as a successful strategic supplier and strengthens the Company’s position as the major wing trailing edge supplier to Airbus, providing fixed trailing edge packages to the A330/A340, A380 and now A400M programmes.
Frank Bamford, Sales and Marketing Director, GKN Aerospace, Europe, said: “”These are important contract wins for the business because they clearly demonstrate our position as a committed strategic supplier, on pioneering new aircraft programmes.
“”They also reinforce our technology lead in composites. The main wing spar contract, announced in March represents the first application of carbon composite materials for major primary structures on the wing of a large transport aircraft. This second A400M contract positions GKN Aerospace as the prime source of wing trailing edge packages for long range, heavy lift aircraft, including military transporters.””
