Scott Bader will be promoting its expanded Crystic Ecogel range with a new ultra-low styrene Iso/NPG marine gelcoat at the JEC World Composites Show 2016, in Paris Nord Villepinte, France..
In addition, Scott Bader says it will show its marine approved gelcoat additions to its ‘GelTint’ volumetric gel-tinting service; Crestabond PP-04, a new 1:1 adhesive with a working time of four minutes, developed for bonding polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE) and other low surface energy thermoplastics; plus an even faster, sub- three minute curing, new Crestabond M1-02 primer-less structural adhesive grade which has been added to the range for high volume assembly of metal, plastic and composite components.
These new products and services will be promoted alongside a new Crestapol high performance urethane acrylate resin automotive application featured on the stand, along with other high performance laminating resins, FR gelcoats, bonding pastes and matched tooling products from Scott Bader’s extensive suite of materials for advanced composites.
Scott Bader’s ‘GelTint’ volumetric gelcoat colour tinting service now includes marine quality Lloyd’s Register approved isophthalic (Iso) brush and spray applied Crystic gelcoat options, which have undergone extensive testing and customer trials. This gelcoat colour tinting service, which now offers customers a choice of both ortho and Iso polyester gelcoat grades, is being rolled out beyond the UK to other parts of mainland Europe during 2016.
The expanded Ecogel ultra-low styrene range will include S3PA, a new Lloyd’s approved Iso/NPG marine grade with a 22% styrene content, yet still offering Scott Bader’s proven gelcoat technology for superior weathering performance in marine applications. This new grade follows on from Crystic EcogelS1PA, developed primarily for the wind energy generator sector, which is specified globally by LM Wind Power for all its polyester windmill blades, reducing LM shop floor styrene emissions by over 50%; Ecogel S1PA has only 16% styrene emission (measured under comparable conditions in a spray booth using a MiniRae 3000i according to EN ISO test methods). According to Scott Bader, Ecogel S1PA still has the lowest styrene emission level of the unsaturated polyester gelcoats that are currently commercially available.
The new 2016 addition to Scott Bader’s primer-less structural adhesives range, Crestabond M1-02, is now the fastest curing 10:1 ratio grade option available. M1-02 has been developed for higher volume assembly of smaller parts, which must be ready to handle in under three minutes for cost effective productivity; all grades in the Crestabond range are suitable for bonding a wide range of metal, plastic and composite substrates. As well as the new PP-04 1:1 grade for bonding polyolefins, the 1:1 ratio black pigmented Crestabond grades for improving the bond joint aesthetics of black ABS and carbon fibre (CF) composites components, plus the DNV-GL independently approved Crestabond M1-30 and M1-60 grades for the joining of components for marine applications, will also be highlighted on the stand.
Being shown for the very first time at JEC Paris this year, Scott Bader will have on its stand the prototype for a new British sports car. This newtwo seater convertible sports car has a very rigid, lightweight carbon fibre (CFRP) composite passenger cell frame fabricated by Axon Automotive (a subsidiary of Far-UK), using its internationally patented AxontexTM structural beam technology, which specifies Scott Bader’s Crestapol 1250LV as the high performance infusion resin. Crestabond M1-20 primer-less methacrylate structural adhesive is also extensively used by Axon to bond the CFRP frame sections together. According to Axon Automotive the passenger cell prototype frame design is 43% stiffer and is 15% lighter (by mass) than an equivalent lightweight steel frame.
Representatives from Scott Bader will be giving two technical papers in JEC open forum presentations. The first paper is on Tuesday 8 March 2016 at 1:30pm on the topical subject of ‘Advanced Gelcoats, Adhesives and Crestapol Resins in Land Transport Applications’, highlighting processing, productivity, lightweighting and performance benefits to manufacturers and end users. Then on Wednesday 9 March at 1:30pm a second paper is being given titled ‘Urethane Acrylate Resin Systems – Not Your Normal Sticky Stuff’, providing technical insights into the resin chemistry and unique properties achievable, which has enabled Crestapol resins to be used instead of a liquid or prepreg epoxy based system in both glass and carbon fibre automotive applications, as well as for construction, marine and land transportation applications, especially where stringent fire, smoke and toxic fumes (FST) standards must be met.
