Scott Bader- ATC Showcasing Advanced Composite Materials for Marine Applications at IBEX 2014 Show

Scott Bader ATC will promote its advanced materials at IBEX, which this year is taking place from 30 September – 2 October in Tampa, Florida, US.

The company states the focus of its stand will be to help FRP boat builders design and cost effectively manufacture lighter, stronger and better looking vessels using composite materials. 

Scott Bader-ATC explains it will also be showcasing at IBEX a new application case study about the use of its Crestomer structural adhesive in a CTruk twin hull offshore wind farm FRP workboat, which uses no over-lamination in key structural areas to save weight and cost.

This case study, is about UK based CTruk Boats which specialises in designing and building high speed, lightweight composite, fibre reinforced plastic (FRP) catamaran style commercial, military and security workboats for demanding offshore applications.  I

n order to comply with stringent offshore vessel standards, it only uses DNV and BV approved materials. To further reduce weight, increase productivity and cut labour costs wherever possible, CTruk uses a structural adhesive for FRP-FRP joint bonding. 

Scott Bader ATC claims its Crystic Crestomer 1152PA urethane acrylate based structural adhesive is specified by CTruk for all its composite marine craft to structurally bond hull stringers and bulkheads, transom sections, engine beds and deck sections. For hull to deck joints the main deck beam, in spite of it being a high impact area, is joined only using Crystic Crestomer 1152PA, as well as some of the hull and deckhouse structural flange connections.  IBEX visitors can find out more about this application case study at the Scott Bader-ATC booth and online.   

In addition to the new CTruk Boats structural bonding case study, the Scott Bader-ATC stand will have a particular focus on tooling materials, bonding and displacement molding compounds and structural adhesives products for composites marine applications:

The company states Core-Bond range is suitable for bonding foam and balsa cores. The POLY-BOND range of bonding compounds has grades for bonding polyester and vinyl ester parts in a variety of established FRP boatbuilding applications.  For the most demanding FRP marine structural bonding applications, the range of Crystic Crestomer products have been specified all over the world for many years by leading leisure yacht and workboat fiberglass boat builders in critical structural joints including:  bulkheads, stringers, flybridges, and deck to hull joints. The Crestomer range, which has Lloyds Acceptance, DNV and RINA approvals, is also used for bonding marine ply, aluminium and stainless steel parts to fibreglass.  

For manufacturing fibre reinforced or sandwich construction parts using a closed mould compression-type processes, Scott Bader ATC says POLY-BOND B55 and B55LV (low viscosity version) displacement molding compounds (DMC) are offered.  Poly-Bond B55 is a white, low density polyester based DMC, designed to fill the space within fibre reinforcement layers and cores.

Scott Bader claims two Poly-Fair modified polyester tooling compounds are being shown at the show, an extrudable and sprayable version.  Poly-Fair T28 is the extrudable tooling compound, designed for milling of small and large plugs or direct limited production moulds using Computer Numerical Control (CNC) multiple axis machines. Poly-Fair T27 is the sprayable version, which is also fully CNC machinable. It is designed for milling patterns and large plugs (30-75 ft, 10-25 m) or direct limited production moulds. It can be sprayed with several passes up to a thickness of approx. 1” (25mm). Both Poly-Fair grades offer the benefits of low shrink, high toughness and dust free cutting to produce a highly accurate profile of the finished part.
