The SAMPE 2004 Symposium & Exhibition at the Long Beach Convention Centre in USA demonstrated the strong growth and vitality predicted by the SAMPE 2004 Organizing Committee earlier this year.
General Co-Chairs, John Green and Steve Rodgers noted that the record number of technical papers (355 this year) had earlier established a 50% increase over previous years, with package registrations for this year’s 25% above last year’s SAMPE 2003.
According to SAMPE, exhibition attendance and participation indicated both increased floor traffic and numerous customer contacts that surpassed previous shows when the industry had gone through economic downturns. Exhibitors were particularly drawn to the new Training/Demonstration Technology booth area that SAMPE 2004 added this year. This area provided opportunities to make presentations, perform technology demonstrations, and conduct training classes on-site with announcements made on the Show Floor every hour. This feature may well be developed further for SAMPE 2005.
SAMPE’s panel on “M&P Technology: SAMPE’s Technical Committee Reports on Current Technology and Market Trends” was attended by over 100 people, according toe SAMPE who were made up of people keen to hear the latest updates on technology, issues, challenges and future needs across the industry. SAMPE’s Senior Vice President, Tia Benson Tolle, and SAMPE’s Technical Director, Dr. Scott Beckwith, led the panel and had to bring it to a close after almost 3 hours apparently because the audience and panelist interaction was so enthusiastic.
The Keynote Address by Michael Fortson, Lockheed-Martin Aeronautics Company, covered the “F-35: 21st Century Fighter Design and Materials Technology” while Dr. Harley Thronson, NASA Headquarters, provided the SAMPE Luncheon talk on “Mars and NASA’s Plans for Future Space Exploration.” Over 350 people attended each of these cutting edge technology presentations. SAMPE 2004 also celebrated its 60th Anniversary after the Exhibits closed on Tuesday afternoon, providing a band playing a well received selection of 1940’s music.
