SAMPE ’09 ended with a ceremonious awards luncheon, closing out the world’s largest conference and exhibition for advanced materials.

Only it’s second time on the east coast, the location attracted 40 new exhibiting companies, with 250 total exhibiting companies, 250 technical presentations, nine tutorials and 3300 attendees. “”Even in challenging economic times, serious M&P companies recognize the importance of having representation at the world’s largest advanced materials exhibition,”” commented SAMPE President Bill Avery, Boeing Airplane Group, Seattle, Washington. “”SAMPE ’09 offers an unparalleled network of advanced M&P professionals determined to prepare for the opportunities that will undoubtedly result from these changing times.””

The SAMPE exhibit hall experienced heavy foot traffic, which pleased exhibitors and attendees alike. The large crowds present took advantage of the opportunity to take advantage of the SAMPE Presentation Theater, located in the exhibit hall. Dr. Avery stated, “We are very satisfied with the responses we have received from all of our participants: attendees, speakers, and exhibitors.”

On Monday, May 18, SAMPE inducted five new SAMPE Fellows into the SAMPE Fellow Program. Ms. Arlene McKeeman Brown, Dr. Takashi Ishikawa, Dr. Tia Benson Tolle, Dr. Ignaas Verpoest, and Professor Yichu Yin were recognized for their leadership, passion and vision in the field of material and process engineering.

The conference officially kicked off Tuesday with a keynote presentation presented by Mr. Marc Stanley, Director of the Technology Innovation Program at the National Institute of Standards and Technology on “”Partnerships to Meet Critical National Needs.”” Mr. Stanley discussed the critical national needs facing the nation and challenged SAMPE attendees to consider ways to effectively transform the current materials and processes to the next century model systems.

Wednesday’s keynote presenter Dr. James Walker, President of the American Wind Energy Association and a member of the Board of Directors of enXco, a leading US developer, owner and operator of wind energy projects, delivered “”Towards a U.S. Clean Energy Future: Drivers and Opportunities”” and addressed the growth of dependence on imported energy and fossil fuels and the role that energy investment can play in stimulating economic growth.

On Thursday, Mr. Dale L. Moore, Chief Systems Engineer for the Navy Unmanned Combat Air System for the Naval Air Systems Command, delivered the final SAMPE ’09 Keynote “”Overview of U.S. Navy Unmanned Combat Air System (UCAS)””, which provided an overview of the Navy Unmanned Combat Air System, including efforts made to date and a highlight of the key technological challenges necessary to meet future goals.

In addition to keynote presentations, conference attendees had their pick of distinguished lectures, panels and sessions to attend. Topics included renewable energy, composite manufacturing innovations, liquid molding processes, and multifunctional hybrids and composites, to name a few.

“”The response to the conference programs has been especially rewarding,”” said SAMPE ’09 General Co-Chair Doug Ward, GE Aviation, West Chester, Ohio. “”The information presented at this conference exposes the work of engineers and scientists whose innovations moving this industry forward. We especially appreciate their contributions and are pleased to offer the most current conference programming.””

SAMPE 2010 will be sponsored by SAMPE’s Seattle Chapter. The conference dates are May 17-20, 2010 and the exhibition dates are May 18-20, 2010. The program will be held at the Washington State Convention Center in Seattle, Washington. “”With the conference returning to the west coast to the attractive Seattle location, SAMPE ’10 is on track for amazing success,”” said Dr. Avery.
