The SAMPE Board of Directors met in Long Beach, CA at SAMPE ’08, a semi-annual meeting to vote on policy changes for the upcoming year.

Among items voted upon, policy changes that passed included the decision to eliminate the Senior Vice President position, rename the SAMPE Michigan Chapter the SAMPE Great Lakes Chapter, and an initiative to create new membership opportunities. The board also voted to approve advisory of student chapters by a professional member, in lieu of a faculty advisor when none is available. In addition, Gary Valentine, 1987 SAMPE President, was selected as an Honorary Senior Member.

The board also approved a new two-tier membership dues structure for North American members. Renewing members will renew at US$102.00. New or lapsed members will join SAMPE at US$122.00.

Five new SAMPE Fellows were inducted at the Fellows Dinner at SAMPE ’08. The SAMPE Fellow Award recognizes SAMPE members for their distinguished, lifelong contributions in the fields of materials and processes. Since its inception in 1982, only 114 distinguished individuals have been designated as a SAMPE Fellow.

Pamela K. Strong, Associate Technical Fellow at United Launch Alliance, is the New Fellow Program Chair. She will oversee the selection of the 2009 Fellows selection. The deadline to nominate fellows for 2009 is July 30. To access information about the nomination process, visit http://www.sampe.org/news/fellowsaward.aspx.

SAMPE ’08 in Long Beach, CA, drew nearly 5,000 attendees and 283 exhibiting companies from around the globe.

“”Exhibit hall traffic on Tuesday was so strong some exhibitors commented they did not have sufficient time to talk to each person who visited their booths,”” SAMPE President Bob Griffiths, Consultant and Director of ERG Ltd. said.

Sponsored by SAMPE’s Utah and Japan chapters, the conference began with two keynotes. Takashi Ishikawa of Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency demonstrated how advanced materials technology is key to the launch of their S3TD aircraft. Mr. Peter Huntsman of The Huntsman Companies gave his perspective of the challenges and opportunities in today’s global market.

SAMPE’s Design and Analysis, Nanotechnology, FRP/Infrastructure, Space and Tooling technical committees also met during SAMPE ’08.
