In the Brazilian state of Paraná, the reverse logistics for post-consumption composite parts has started off successfully.
Created by the Latin American Composite Materials Association (ALMACO), the program began last August and after the three first months collected 322 kg of waste in two collection sites located in the capital city of Curitiba.
“Our first report was approved without restrictions by the Paraná Environmental Office (SEMA),” said Paulo Camatta, Executive Manager of ALMACO. The association also submitted to SEMA the certificate to show the waste is being sent to the proper destination – in this case, being co-processed in cement plant furnaces.
At first, the program includes the reverse logistics of bus components, such as ceilings, railings, and bumpers. According to the agreement signed by ALMACO, after 12 months have been completed, the program will cover 29 cities in Paraná and will have collected, on four collection sites, 5,000 kg of composite materials.
The practical aspects of the project will be under the responsibility of Geoquímica, which is the company responsible for collecting the post-consumer composite parts at bus workshops and ensure their correct disposal. Located in São José dos Pinhais, Geoquímica already works with the reverse logistics of lubricant packaging and automotive filters.
ALMACO explains that its plan has the support of Masimon consulting and thirteen companies of composites production chain: Ashland, CPIC, Jushi, Marcopolo, Mascarello, Morquímica, MVC, Neobus, O-tek, Owens Corning, Reichhold, Royal Polímeros e Tecnofibras. Also support the project the National Association of Bus Manufacturers (FABUS) and the Industry Interstate Association of Rail and Highway Material and Equipment (SIMEFRE).
