Saving Resources and Reducing Waste in Construction

30th January 2006 0 comments

A new initiative has been launched to look at ways of saving resources and reducing waste in construction products, including the use of composites. The new UK project aims to help construction product manufacturers to make more efficient use of materials and processes by investigating their products’ design, manufacture, installation, use and eventual disposal. The project will also look at the wastes created at each stage of a product’s life cycle to identify potential other uses for them. Companies involved in developing, manufacturing, using or disposing of construction products are being invited to take part. The 30-month project is called “BE AWARE” standing for Built Environment – Action on Waste Awareness and Resource Efficiency. It will be led by the Building Research Establishment (BRE) and will involve a consortium of industry partners, including NetComposites. The project will look in detail at approximately 40 construction products to examine whether waste can be reduced and resource efficiency improved. The project will create publicly available guidance and case studies to illustrate how adopting efficient practices in product design and manufacture can help deliver environmental benefits. BRE believes the methodology developed and tested in the project could help bring industry savings of up to 25%. The BE AWARE project is seeking additional companies to include in its product review, and NetComposites is coordinating the composites sector of the construction industry. By becoming involved in the BE AWARE project, companies engaged in composites construction product design, manufacture, installation, use and end-of-life can help steer the project and provide real validation of the sustainability of composite materials in construction. UK Composites companies wishing to receive more information about the project should contact Dr Sue Halliwell at NetComposites at the email address below.
