Owens Corning is opening a Development Support Laboratory (DSL) at the company’s Brazilian site to further support composite manufacturing in Latin America.
The DSL site will be based at the Rio Claro site north of São Paulo, Brazil and according to the company will “”will focus on creating solutions and fine-tuning designs and processes for new and existing products for customers in Latin America.””
Frank O’Brien-Bernini, Vice President, Science and Technology, Owens Corning said that the “”Development Support Lab joins Owens Corning’s global network of research and development facilities in the US, Europe and China…. Currently, more than 400 scientists on five continents are working 24/7 to continue to develop new applications and raise the bar for what composites and building products technology can bring to the market.””
“”The new lab joins an existing R&D facility in Mexico, which is also being upgraded with new equipment and together with the new facility in Brazil will provide additional critical support and help consolidate product and application development for our Latin American customer base,”” said Carlos Valdez, Managing Director, Owens Corning Latin America. “A key part of Owens Corning’s global strategy is a commitment to not just be a materials supplier to our customers in these developing markets but to build the market together and to create customer intimacy through regional, on-the-ground organizations which are immersed in the local environment.””
“”The ability to vary processing parameters in a controlled environment will save time in the development of procedures for new products made with composites,” added Marcio Sandri, General Manager, Composites, Owens Corning Latin America. “”We expect the new development support facility to serve as the focus for a steady flow of internal development, as well as support for customer needs. We are convinced that the more we can supply well-targeted customer support, the greater the rate that Latin American design engineers will take advantage of the benefits of composites.””
The new DSL, to be headed by Edouard Zurstrassen, Customer Support Operations Leader for South America, is equipped to mirror customer procedures and practical manufacturing experiences such as Hand Lay-Up, Spray Up and Resin Transfer Molding (RTM), and a collaborative arrangement with a local university augments the lab’s testing capabilities and broad range of processing techniques.
