The Gold Medal winning bikes ridden to 7 Gold medals, 1 Silver and 1 Bronze by British Cycling riders were designed and manufactured in the East Midlands area, according to Metron Advanced Equipment.
This project was in partnership with and funded by UK Sport and British Cycling. Metron is a small engineering consultancy based in Beeston, Nottingham, UK, and it says its founder, Dimitris Katsanis, a composites engineer and ex-cyclist, designed all the high performance carbon fibre frames and parts of the bikes ridden by Bradley Wiggins, Mark Cavendish, Victoria Pendleton, Chris Hoy, Jason Kenny, Laura Trott, as well as the men’s and women’s multiple world record breaking Team Pursuit riders.
According to Metron, the beginning was in 2002 when the “Athens Project” was conceived by British Cycling to design and manufacture a bike frame for the 2004 Olympics. Since then, and with funding support from UK Sport, Metron explains it has redesigned and improved almost every part of the bike.
Metron explains that the whole project was designed from the beginning as a British based endeavour, drawing from technical knowledge and manufacturing expertise commonly used in industries like Formula One and aerospace. To harness the strength of the riders, Metron used computer design and stress analysis techniques to improve every aspect of the design including optimising the shape and size of individual parts, material selection and placement as well as interactions with each other.
