North Thin Ply Technology Showcases Unique Technologies for Performance Sports at JEC World

North Thin Ply Technology (NTPT) will showcase its range of Thin Ply Prepregs, processing technologies and products for performance sports at JEC World 2017.

As a sister company to the North Technology Group, and as inventors of the 3Di technology for North Sails’ grand prix yacht racing sails, NTPT explains its composite technology is renowned within the world of sport where equipment technology is integral to performance.

NTPT will be presenting new materials for the Autosport market and a fully automated manufacturing process for tubular structures. It will also be launching ThinPreg TP135, describing it as a unique epoxy prepreg system delivering an unparalleled set of composite properties, previously unavailable in ultra-low fibre weight prepreg materials (30gsm upwards).  

Developed in collaboration with the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, NTPT says TP135 provides a powerful combination of market leading compression after impact (approx. 300MPa on a quasi-isotropic intermediate modulus laminate) and exceptional strength properties (1st ply failure at >900MPa for UD ThinPreg TP135 QI laminates with IM fibre).

According to NTPT, specifically tailored for highly loaded applications such as Aerospace, F1 and other autosport structural parts, where properties after impact are a key design driver, TP135 components are the ultimate in lightweight strength.

NTPT says its new composite tube manufacturing process combines precise control of the fibre lay-up angles and the enhanced properties of NTPT Thin Ply prepregs. The result is high quality symmetrically stiff tubes which can be optimised to meet exacting and demanding design requirements. A focus of the process development was to keep costs low so re-shoring composite manufacture to Europe and the US is now a real option for customers.

NTPT explains that this innovative process is ideal for any tubular structure where weight, performance and cost are critical factors, and include applications such as automotive drive shafts, windsurf masts and golf shafts.

The fully automated tube manufacturing process produces perfectly concentric carbon golf shafts that are set to take the golfing world by storm. The shafts were recently launched under the brand name TPT Golf at The Evian 2016, by professional golfer Lydia Ko, who used a TPT Golf driver shaft to win her silver medal at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Visitors to NTPT’s stand at JEC can try out the revolutionary medal-winning TPT Golf shafts on the booth’s interactive driving range and each ‘player’ will receive a personalised analysis. Those at the top of the Leaderboard each day will win a TPT Golf shaft worth 700 USD!
