According to Composite Insights’ latest market study, consumption of composite materials forecast to decelerate through 2017 in Asia Pacific Wind Energy Industry.
The study reports that, for the second year running, the majority of new installations were outside the Europe and America. In 2011 Asia Pacific was the largest wind market in the world, with over 21.5 GW capacity addition. It is estimated by Composite Insights that Asia Pacific will continue to be the world’s largest market through 2017. In Asia Pacific, there are more than 50 blade manufacturers involved in developing wind turbine blades and most of them are very small with product portfolio of 1 - 3 small size blades.
The study says that Asia Pacific will continue to be the world’s largest market with far more new installations than any other region, installing 135 GW between 2012 and 2017. Asia Pacific wind energy market is dominated with standard utility-scale wind turbines (0.75 MW to 2 MW). These turbines fitted with three blades of 30 to 50 m (100-165 ft) in length. The wind energy industry is one of the fastest growing consumers of composite materials in the world. Composite Insights believes there is an enormous opportunity for raw materials used in the fabrication of composite blades in Asia Pacific Wind Energy Industry.
Following domestic demand growth for wind turbine blades, nacelle covers and nose cones, the study explaisn that the demand for composite materials in the Asia Pacific Wind Energy industry is expect to cross 1000 million lbs in 2017 in terms of volume shipments.
This report is now available from the NetComposites Store and can be found here - http://store.netcomposites.com/PD/3021/Opportunities-for-Composites-in-Asia-Pacific-Wind-Energy-Industry-2017?category=5

According to Case, Loos built the world’s first polyurethane blade reinforced with carbon nanotubes, ensuring the composite that was scoring best on preliminary tests could be moulded into the right shape and maintain properties. They say that using a small commercial blade as a template, Loos manufactured a 29-inch blade that is substantially lighter, more rigid and tougher. “The idea behind all this is the need to develop stronger and lighter materials which will enablemanufacturing of blades for larger rotors,” Loos said.

Both Reichhold and Scott Bader will be raising the price of their materials during September. Scott Bader will be increasing the prices of all Crystic unsaturated polyester, DCPD and Vinyl Ester resins, plus all gelcoats and Crystic Crestomer structural adhesives by a further 100 €/tonne on all deliveries from its European sites from September 18th 2006. Scott Bader said that this further increase is due to the continued upward surge in raw material costs during July and August, which has taken prices for certain key raw materials such as styrene, phthalic and maleic anhydride to record highs, with no signs of relief in sight. Malcolm Forsyth, European Commercial Director, Composites business division of Scott Bader stated “Under these circumstances, with such dramatic additional raw material price increases imposed on us so quickly, we have no choice but to pass on these price increases to our customers; to not do so would have serious implications on the viability of our business. However, where we can, we do look to try to work with and help our customers to minimise any negative impact on their business.” Reichhold will be making a price increase of 100 € (Euro) per metric tonne on all of its products sold to the composites industry in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. This increase is in addition to the ones announced in April and July and is effective for September shipments onward. “This increase is a needed response to the escalating cost of key raw materials, tight availability of specific key ingredients and rising fuel, energy and transportation costs,” explained Reichhold’s EMEA Vice President of Sales Alberto Piccinotti. “Reichhold is making all possible efforts to minimize the impact of raw material costs and secure the volumes required to support the growth of the composites industry. We appreciate our customers’ understanding during these rapidly changing times.” “Unfortunately no short-term improvement is forecasted, and we expect these historically high raw material costs to continue for some time,” he concluded.

Scott Bader, AOC and Reichhold have all announced price increases this week. From 1 March 2003, the Scott Bader Composites Business will be increasing its polyester resin and gelcoat prices by 100 Euro/T. The price increases will apply throughout Europe. The increases are due to the sustained high price of crude oil at over $30/barrel and the resulting strong upward movement in the price of styrene, the key component in polyester resins. Increases in the prices of other key raw materials such as phthalic and maleic anhydride and propylene glycol have compounded the situation. Prices are expected to climb further in the coming months.

Ameron International Corporation’s first quarter's operating performance reflects the continued strength of their Fiberglass-Composite Pipe and Infrastructure Products businesses. The Fiberglass-Composite Pipe Group's sales and profits increased due to the continued worldwide demand for oil field piping. While shipments to industrial and fuel-handling markets remained flat during the quarter, production of larger-diameter fiberglass pipe began for a water project in California. This is a relatively new market for Ameron's fiberglass pipe and should enhance the already positive outlook for the Fiberglass-Composite Pipe business in 2001.

Cal Dive International, Inc. and the Energy Systems business of FMC Corporation have entered into an agreement to develop and jointly fund a new intervention riser system that will be rated to operate in water depths to 10,000 feet. It will also be the first in the industry rated for working pressures up to 15,000 psi. The riser system, to be deployed from Cal Dive's newbuild Q4000, will be able to intervene in the horizontal and vertical subsea trees of all manufacturers. Using a composite reelable 2 inch flexipipe, the riser system allows for the circulation of fluids, flow testing and hydrate remediation of subsea wells. The riser's slim bore also allows it to be handled easier and run much faster than a conventional marine riser system. For example, the new system can be latched onto a subsea tree within six hours of arriving on station. http://www.caldive.com
