Zeon Chemicals has commercialised a new toughened tackifier resin for toughening resin infusion and liquid molding composite systems.
Applications include epoxy RTM and VARTM resin systems used in aerospace, automotive, sporting goods and industrial applications. DuoMod ZT-1 is supplied in an acetone solution to allow for easy spraying onto a variety of fabrics and fibers. It can be applied either by fabric producers or by RTM/VARTM processors prior to resin infusion.
It is claimed to impart a dramatic increase in the interlaminar fracture toughness of the resin system, resulting in increased damage tolerance as measured by compression after impact (CAI) of composite systems.
Mark Shioleno, Zeon Sr. Marketing Specialist, said, “”DuoMod ZT-1 offers resin infusion processors a viable option for increasing the damage tolerance of their composite parts, with no significant effect on processing or mechanical performance. It provides the toughening benefits of Zeon¹s existing DuoMod particulate tougheners, while acting as a traditional tackifier by increasing the initial integrity of the preform. We believe there is a significant market for toughening resin-infused composites.””
