NDT Automation has released a new Pocket Ultrasonic scanning system for the non-destructive inspection of FRP composites.
The pocket PC-operated scanner is used for the non-destructive inspection of metal structures, composite fibre-reinforced concrete polymers, thick composite materials and other materials/structures that are difficult to inspect with Ultrasonic and other traditional NDT devices.
A second version of this hand-held unit is based on Acousto-Ultrasonic technology that emits an acoustic waveform (a few hundred kHz) as a pulse and directs it to the material. The acoustic signal features, such as amplitude and energy, are affected when the acoustic pulses travel through the material and encounter defects (i.e. delamination and debonding).
Like the Pocket UT, the Pocket AU receiver recognizes these changes. The system processes the results and displays them as A-Scan and C-Scan images. Defects can be easily identified from the C-Scan images.
The Pocket UTTM has 2 encoder inputs to produce a true C-Scan image. The company said that this has been utilized successfully in the quality inspection of thick composite materials and bridge and concrete structure rehabilitation with the fibre-reinforced concrete polymer, where other traditional NDT methods cannot successfully inspect.
The pocket PC runs under Windows CE software, easy to operate and uses an encoded rolling dry coupled sensor, rather than point reading as with other NDT devices. It produces C-Scan resolution up to 1/16”, scan amplitude and TOF adjustable gate. A permanent digital record of the test results is stored on compact flash card for data transfer to laptop or desktop PC
