DSM have introduced a new backing technology, which utilises the strong Dyneema fibre to provide lightweight personal armour protection.
The new technology provides a starting point for designing hybrid inserts consisting of a backing with Dyneema skinned with a ceramic strike face. The backing is to defeat rifle threats by stopping bullets fragmented by the ceramic plate, and retain the plate integrity upon impact. DSM claim that the inserts will offer excellent multi-hit protection.
Backing with Dyneema can be shaped to fit without unnecessary bulk, providing unencumbered mobility, and provides tailored penetration resistance for a range of tactical needs.
DSM Dyneema developed the new backing technology in collaboration with leading composites and armour producers. This technology is expected to be used for a wide range of small arms protective inserts for military, and law enforcement personnel.
“”We build on Dyneema products to resist penetration, yet keep protective armour weight as low as possible,”” said Michael Mackes, sales manager for Verseidag Indutex (Krefeld, Germany), which is using the backing technology in a new product. “”By far the majority of our clients ask us to combine effective protection with light weight, and Dyneema helps us do that.””
The Verseidag product is the newest in their Ultrax line of materials and semi-finished products for protection against ballistic threats. By using backing technology based on Dyneema, Verseidag can quickly adapt its product to nearly any international specification or front-line need.

In addition to its new Ultrax protection product, Verseidag Indutex also uses Dyneema in a variety of other armour products, including panels in complex, 3D sculptured shapes fitted to automobile and truck body panels. Having worked for more than ten years in close collaboration with DSM Dyneema, Verseidag Indutex provides armour solutions for a broad range of OEM customers, including BMW and DaimlerChrysler.
The new technology is currently already available in products from Verseidag and Roshield A/S (Odense, Denmark).
