Andrew Long, Head of the Polymer Composites Research Group & Course Director, Mechanical Engineering, School of Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering at the University of Nottingham has been elected as the new chairman of the UK and Ireland Chapter of SAMPE.
He was confirmed in office unanimously at the Chapter AGM held at Airbus UK, Filton on 27 May 2005 and succeeds long-serving past Chairman Roy McCarthy.
“I am excited by the challenge ahead,” said Professor Long, “and I am most grateful to my predecessor for handing over things in such great shape. With growing networking opportunities through increased membership and an active programme of technical meetings and industry visits, SAMPE has a great deal to offer materials and process professionals in the UK and Ireland.”
In one of his first tasks as Chairman, Long announced that, following on from the very successful joint symposium on ‘Out of Autoclave Moulding’ held jointly with Nottingham Composites Club earlier this year, the theme of the Chapter’s next Technical Symposium will be ‘Advanced Lightweight Structures’, scheduled to take place at Cranfield University on 23 February 2006.
Roy McCarthy, formerly Technical Manager – Composites at Smiths Aerospace Dowty Propellers, Gloucester and now a special technical advisor to the company, has served as Chairman of SAMPE in the UK and Ireland since 1993. He will continue to take an active part in the chapter as Vice-Chairman. His colleagues marked the occasion with a special presentation. Bob Griffiths’ spoke for many when he expressed the Club’s widespread respect and appreciation for the superb job done by McCarthy during his twelve years in office.
SAMPE (Society of Advanced Material and Process Engineering), is an international society with over 6000 members and open to anyone active in materials and process engineering.
