Huntsman Advanced Materials has produced a new toughened epoxy adhesive formulated for fabricating sandwich panels.

New Araldite AW 8545-1 Resin/Hardener HW 8545-1 epoxy adhesive is claimed to be a high-strength material specially formulated for bonding metal or composite skins to aluminium or aramid-fibre honeycomb cores. The product features a two-hour work life permitting its use for large panel-bonding projects and has a low coefficient of thermal expansion to minimize read-through from internal honeycomb cores to panel surfaces.

Araldite AW 8545-1 Resin/Hardener HW 8545-1 epoxy adhesive has a convenient 1:1 mix ratio and a readily spreadable viscosity of 43,000 cP. Panels bonded with the epoxy can be handled after 24 hours at room temperature or 15 minutes at 212°F (100°C). Once cured, the adhesive produces durable laminates with a shear strength of more than 3,000 psi and a glass transition temperature of 135°F (57°C).
