The Network Group for Composites in Construction (NGCC) is delighted to announce the 2nd Early Career Researchers Competition (ECR) which will take place during the Advanced Composites in Construction Conference (ACIC) on 10th September 2013 at Queen’s University Belfast.

NGCC is keen to develop awareness among young engineers of the importance and potential of research in fibre reinforced polymers (FRPs). The competition is aimed at the next generation of engineers who are enthusiastic about FRPs in structural engineering and are ready to make their mark. By holding the event alongside the ACIC conference this provides a unique platform for researchers to present their work and exchange ideas with their peers and key academic and industry leaders.

Entrants may be students registered for research degrees, employees of research organisation or those working in practice with less than five years full time, or equivalent research experience in FRP structural engineering at the date of the conference. Candidates are invited to apply to NGCC to present at ECR 2013 by submitting a short project synopsis.

Selected finalists will be invited to the first day of the conference to showcase their work through a short oral presentation and poster display.

The 2011 winner and runners up of this competition were:

Winner:

Paul McNulty, Queen’s University Belfast – The Development of the Skewed FlexiArch.

Runners Up:

Philip Isaac, University of Bath – Fundamental Analysis of the Behaviour of Unwrapped and FRP Wrapped RC Columns Subjected to Blast and Impact Loads.

Peter Gates, University of Bath – Polymeric Facades: Advanced Composites for Retrofit.

The winner and runners up will be chosen by delegates attending the conference and announced at the conference dinner on 11th September which takes place at Queen’s University Belfast’s prestigious Great Hall.

More information and entry forms are available through NGCC or the conference website.
