Mat4Rail Targets Fire-Resistant Composites for Future Railways

Aimplas is participating in the European project Mat4Rail: Designing the Railway of the Future: Fire Resistant Composite Materials and Smart Modular Design.

The project will aim to develop innovative materials and a modular design for railway rolling stock to deliver improvements in terms of cost, functionality and reliability, increased capacity and energy efficiency, and reduced life cycle costs. Weight reduction of trains will be achieved by replacing metal parts by fibre reinforced polymers with certified mechanical and fire performance. New solutions for increasing railway capacity and passenger comfort will also be developed by the modular design of interior parts.

The project, which started in October 2017, has already developed new epoxy resin formulations with improved flame-retardant properties.

Mat4Rail will last for two years and is coordinated by CIDETEC, Spain. 15 research institutes, SMEs, companies and university from seven European countries are taking part.

The project has received funds from the Shift2Rail Joint Undertaking (S2R JU), one of the public-private partnerships within the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation programme.
