Malaysia to Design CFRP Unmanned Aircraft

Malaysia will design and develop its own composite unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for search and rescue operations, or monitor accidents and crime surveillance.

The UAVs which can be fitted with cameras or closed-circuit television (CCTV) may soon be marketed via a joint venture between Universiti Sains Malaysia and System Consultancy Services Sdn Bhd (SCS.

The MOU was signed by USM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dzulkifli Abdul Razak and SCS chairman Khalilur Rahman Ebrahim earlier this week .

The small aircraft, with a wingspan of 3m could fly above traffic and monitor accidents or crimes.

USM will design the carbon fibre frame of the aircraft while SCS will undertake the system integration and manufacturing of the aircraft. USM’s School of Aerospace Engineering deputy dean Illyia Mohd Yusof said search and rescue operations now were expensive and involved many people.

“With the UAV, the search can be done from a ground control room, with the un-manned aircraft relaying signals or sending pictures,” he said.

Earlier, Prof Dzulkilfi opened the four-day National Aero-space Conference 2004 at USM’s Engineering campus in Nibong Tebal. Over 100 aerospace experts from Malaysia, Germany, Britain and the United States attended the conference.
