Malaysia Airlines has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Composites Technology Research Malaysia (CTRM) for the setting up of a composite repair centre.
The MoU was signed at the launching ceremony of the Malaysia International Aerospace Centre (MIAC) in Subang.. Witnessing this important milestone for the country were Prime Minister, YAB Dato’ Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, Minister of Transport, YB Dato’ Seri Chan Kong Choy and Minister of Human Resources, YB Datuk Wira Dr. Fong Chan Onn. This MoU signals yet another important development in making Malaysia an emerging key player in the Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul (MRO) Centre in this region. It also supports the Government’s blueprint for aerospace development in achieving Vision 2020.
Dato’ Ahmad Fuaad Dahlan, Managing Director Malaysia Airlines said, “This partnership makes us more attractive as a one-stop MRO Centre. With the A380s coming online, Malaysia Airlines as a MRO centre in this region is poised to benefit by specialising in high-tech in composite technology. We are now able to expand our expertise to more complex structural work that involves fuselage and cowlings of the aircraft and engine.”
Echoing this further, Col. (Rtd) Rosdi Mahmud, Chief Executive Officer CTRM said, “We are the 15th largest composite supplier for Airbus and we are certified to carry out such complex work in this region. We also have the capacity to take on more work. This joint venture is timely for us in preparation for the entry of the A380 in this part of the world. We also hold certification to carry out work for the Eagle 150 and Lancair Columbia 300.”
At present, Malaysia Airlines is the only MRO centre in the region to offer an integrated array of specialised services such as airframe maintenance, component repair and overhaul, major modification, cabin upgrade, installation of blended winglets, aircraft boutique painting, passenger-to-freighter conversion as well as technical personnel training. It has tie-ups with several internationally renowned companies such as Leading Edge Aviation Services, Thales, PEMCO and Aviation Partners Boeing to name a few.
By tapping on CTRM’s capability as a certified Original Equipment Manufacturing (OEM) provider for Airbus and specialist in the composite technology, Malaysia Airlines is now be able to conduct such repairs in-house instead of sourcing from overseas. This translates into added efficiency and cost savings in terms of aircraft downtime. CTRM on the other hand is able to optimise its capacity by taking on more third party work.
