The winner and two runners up in the NGCC ECR competition were revealed at the Advanced Composites in Construction (ACIC) conference dinner on 11th September 2013, which took place at Queen’s University Belfast’s prestigious Great Hall.

The competition was aimed at the next generation of engineers who are enthusiastic about fibre-reinforced-polymers (FRPs) in structural engineering and are currently making their mark with research projects, which will drive the industry forward.

Eight entrants selected by a panel of NGCC industry members were invited to the conference to present their work. They gave a five minute project overview, which was followed by a drinks reception where delegates were invited to see more about their work and ask questions, before voting on each poster.

The competition was kindly sponsored by Atkins who presented the winner with a cash prize of £250 as well as a certificate and a years’ membership to NGCC. Two runners up were highly commended and also receive a certificate and a years’ membership to NGCC. The results are as follows.

Winner:

Friction Riveting as a New Joining Solution for GFRP Lightweight Emergency Bridges
Lucian-Attila Blaga, Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht, Centre for Materials and Coastal Research.

Highly commended:

Lateral-Torsional Buckling Resistance of Pultruded FRP Beams
Tien Thuy Nguyen, University of Warwick; and

Fire Performance of FRP Reinforced Concrete: Bond Deterioration at Elevated Temperature
Emma Reid-McIntyre, University of Edinburgh.

The competition, which is in its second year, will be run again alongside the ACIC 2015 conference.
