LRM Industries Awarded U.S. Govt. Contract for Proprietary TPF Components

LRM Industries has been awarded a new US Government contract for a program which involves work ways to limit ultra violet damage to composite structures.

The contract with LRM Industries, which is a joint venture of Envirokare Tech Inc. and NOVA Chemicals Inc., involve producing fieldable ISO containers with EMI (Electro Magnetic Interference) shielding features utilizing the TPF – Thermoplastic Flowforming process. The contract is valued at $750K with the extension adding $187K for development under an SBIR (Small Business Innovative Research) phase II program. The containers are typically 20 or 40 foot.

The contract also involves work on novel and unique ways to limit ultra violet damage to composite structures. According to LRM, this work concerning “novel means of UV protection”” is still in development. The one used on the container is UV inhibitor blended into the polymer.

Dr. John Verbicky, President of LRM Industries, said, “”These are development contracts, which, if successful, could lead to follow on production and assembly of ISO containers with a revenue value of several million dollars to LRM Industries, LLC.””

The contract and contract extension were issued to LRM Industries, LLC, the successor company assuming all prior TCD business following the merger of TCD and Envirokare. Envirokare assigned all its interests in the TPF technology acquired from TCD, to the joint-venture company, LRM Industries LLC.

The additional phase II contract was issued by the US Government to LRM Industries, to develop a wall panel for the Composite Tactical Shelters using Thermoplastic Flowforming TPF – Technology.

Dr. Dale Polk, the inventor of the technology and now a consultant to LRM Industries LLC, said, “”We are pleased with the contracts and the continued confidence the US Military has shown for Thermoplastic Flowforming Technology. This tradition started with TCD Thermoplastic Composite Designs and continues on solid ground with LRM Industries. We are already the frame manufacturers of this project and this new Phase II contract for the development of a thermoplastic wall panel gives LRM Industries the ability to produce the entire Composite Tactical Shelter.”” A “”shelter frame”” is similar in structure to that of an ocean freight container.

When asked about the composite tactical shelter, LRM told Netcomposites that the composite shelter (pictured) is a “highly specialized version of the standard ISO container, developed for specific applications/uses”. Further details were not available.

TPF is an emerging process technology for the low pressure, fully automated moulding of long-fibre-reinforced thermoplastic (LFRT) large structural parts providing enhanced mechanical properties through the randomization and preservation of fibre length in moulded parts. LFRT moulded products represent one of the fastest growing elements of the worldwide moulded plastics market with applications replacing conventional materials such as steel, aluminium, wood, fibreglass and cement, in nearly all major industrial market segments.
