Momentum Model Technologies HB, Sweden, has developed its Lightweight Hand-Launched Glider, model Sirius F3K, using Oxeon’s spread carbon tow fabric TeXtreme.
The fuselage and wings of this glider incorporates TeXtreme fabric to achieve greater weight reductions than earlier models.
With its wing span and length measuring 1.5 and 1.1 m respectively, this lightweight glider weighs only 215 g and is 7% lighter than other glider models made using conventional woven carbon reinforcements. The lightness of the glider, attributed to TeXtreme’s structure, offers the weight-conscious professional practitioners of this sport the advantages of easy, quick and accurate manoeuvrability. Remote controlled gliders require a fine balance in construction and Textreme enables a uniform weight distribution
Andreas Böttcher, VP Sales & Marketing, Oxeon, observed that hand-launched gliding is an extremely delicate and weight-sensitive activity that requires sturdier constructions using lighter reinforcements. The special need of this sporting field has steered Oxeon to focus on producing suitable lightweight reinforcements for them. “TeXtreme’s unique flat structure produces relatively less crimp in the fabric. As a consequence, there is significant reduction in accumulation of unwanted matrix in the crimping pockets.
