Launch of new Cowes Harbour Commission RIB

The Stimson-designed composite RIB was sea trialled successfully shortly before Skandia Cowes Week began, and has been in full service since 29th July.

‘We are pleased to have been able to use the new RIB during Skandia Cowes Week, one of the busiest times of the year for us,’ said Harbour Master, Cpt Stuart McIntosh. ‘As well as designing the boat, Stimson Yachts were fully involved throughout the build process, helping to ensure she was delivered in time for the regatta. She has fulfilled every expectation in terms of performance, handling and functionality, even exceeding in some areas. She is most definitely the flagship boat of our fleet.’

She is the first of the new range of Stimson-designed high performance semi-custom composite RIBs currently under construction on the Isle of Wight. The high cure temperature hull and deck tooling was developed with customisation in mind, enabling a range of composite build techniques and materials to be used depending on the client’s requirements, from wet lay up vinylester and E-glass, to epoxy Kevlar or carbon prepreg. There are three sizes available, each with a standard hull allowing individual requirements to be accommodated through custom deck layouts, making them viable for different roles, from workboats to leisure RIBs to super yacht tenders. The second boat in build is a luxury RIB destined for the Meditteranean, and the third is to be used as a super yacht tender.

‘The result of this semi-custom approach is that a client can benefit from both an existing proven performance-orientated hull and a customised deck layout, without having to pay the costs of a fully bespoke RIB’ says Christian Stimson, owner and principal designer at Stimson Yachts. ‘For anyone looking to fulfil exceptional performance criteria– whether that’s speed, durability or functionality – we believe these RIBs are the answer.’

The Cowes Harbour Commission’s RIB incorporated the latest generation Volvo D4/225hp inboard diesel and Hamilton 241 waterjet to allow both shallow draft operations, and a high bollard pull of ¾ tonnes to tow and retrieve disabled yachts; a stainless steel bimini and cage for shade and shelter, carrying instruments, flashing lights and the PA system; and dual fuel tanks (184 litres total).
