KraussMaffei Berstorff’s Extruders with Coatings for Longer Service Life

KraussMaffei Berstorff (KB) is supplying its counter-rotating, parallel twin-screw extruders with extra wear protection in machines intended for processing polyolefin and PVC based natural fibre composites (NFC).

KB has developed the coating to protect the extruders from excessive wear problems and shorter service life caused by NFC. “Wear protection optimised for the material being processed guarantees far longer service lives for the processing units; this minimises downtime and the associated maintenance costs and loss of productivity,” says Michael Finkenzeller, Product Manager of Renewable Raw Materials, KB Extrusion Technology Division.

KB explained that increased expansion forces occur during the processing of resin compounds and result in adhesion wear on the screw outer diameter and in the barrel bores. To reduce this adhesion wear, they adapted the screw geometry to optimise flight and inter-screw clearance. NFC also cause abrasion wear and so KB have given the screws a protective hard chrome plating.
