Huber Engineered Materials (HEM), part of J.M. Huber Corporation, will launch three MoldX optimized alumina trihydrate (ATH) grades at the Composites+Polycon 2009 this week.
The grades are MoldX A100, MoldX C200 and MoldX W300.
MoldX A100 is a flame retardant (FR) capable of very high loading levels, from 250 phr to as high as 400 phr. The grade is an ideal zero halogen choice for new products requiring smoke suppression, and its higher ATH loadings boost FR properties without increasing viscosity. MoldX A100 is well-suited for hand lay-up, pultrusion, sheet moulding compound (SMC) and bulk moulding compound (BMC) applications.
MoldX C200 replaces resin, which can result in a significant cost savings. Its low viscosity performance allows the formulator to achieve higher loadings than with regular ATH products. In addition to increased resin displacement, the high loading attribute also allows for increased flame retardance. The grade is an optimized combination of ATH and ground calcium carbonate (GCC) and is the perfect replacement for regular ATH grades in SMC and BMC formulations.
MoldX W300 is best suited for colour-sensitive thermoset applications, such as cast polymer, SMC and BMC. The product imparts excellent flame retardancy and its increased loading level will return formulation savings through resin displacement and offer new application possibilities as a result of decreased flame spread and smoke generation.
“Huber is very excited to introduce these three new MoldX grades to the marketplace, as they each have specific advantages and applications to offer the formulator,” says Don Mills, ATH director of sales. “For formulators concerned about the costs of resins and always changing FR regulatory environment, these products are the ideal alternative.”
Also at Composites+Polycon 2009, Huber will showcase its Granite Elite textured pigments and SB, Micral and Hymod (surface modified) grades of ATH along with its Marble Elite Alpha cultured marble filler and Hubercarb ground calcium carbonate grades for bulk and sheet moulding compounds and contact moulding applications.
