Huber Affiliated With Newly-Formed Phosphorus, Inorganic and Nitrogen Flame Retardants Association

Huber Engineered Materials is now affiliated with Pinfa-NA (Phosphorus, Inorganic and Nitrogen Flame Retardants Association-North America) which was formed by leaders in the flame retardant industry that focus on non-halogen solutions and materials.

Pinfa-NA is a sister organization of Pinfa, a sector group of Cefic (The European Chemical Industry Council). The group says its primary focus is to:

  • Advance environmentally friendly non-halogenated flame retardant solutions in North America
  • Bring together manufacturers and users of major flame retardant technologies
  • Support fire safety through innovative, reliable and sustainable fire performance solutions, using products based on non-halogen phosphorus (P), nitrogen (N) and inorganic compounds (metal ions, hydroxides)
  • Sponsor and participate in conferences/workshops on flame retardants and end uses
  • Monitor and work with industry and regulatory organizations

According to Huber, halogenated flame retardants pose risk factors which have compelled industry and government regulators to consider non-halogen alternatives. For example, in 2006 the European Union banned the use of certain halogenated flame retardants due to environmental and health concerns. Consumer electronic original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) have since instituted voluntary bans on the use of bromine- and chlorine-based materials in their products.

“Huber is looking forward to our relationship with Pinfa-NA and promoting together in North America and worldwide the use of non-halogen flame retardants and smoke suppressants,” says Don Mills, Sales Director of Huber’s Industrial Minerals Business. “We have for over a quarter century been a supplier of non-halogenated products believing them to be the standard for responsible industry solutions. As we evolve globally seeking “greener” solutions for sustainability and improving safety for people and the environment, there’s no question these products will be key to the future of the fire retardant additive industry.”

Marc Lebel, Chairman of Pinfa-NA and CEO of FRX Polymers noted that “Pinfa-NA will serve as the organisation’s North American platform to advance the use of environmentally friendly flame retardants, as the focus for greener consumer and industrial products advance. We’re excited about this endeavour and have already planned a one-day conference to discuss green electronics requirements for flame retardants.”

In addition to Huber, Pinfa-NA has already garnered a group of members from the industry including Clariant Additives, FRX Polymers, Nabaltec, PolyOne Corporation, Network Polymers and Applied Minerals.
