High Modulus Proves Benefits of Hexforce Material

Hexcel and High Modulus have joined forces to prove the benefits of a new carbon reinforcement fabric for high performance composite marine applications.

Currently available in a carbon double bias 400gsm version, HexForce NC2 In-ply Symmetric is a three-ply stitched reinforcement, which is internally symmetric. This means that the outer plies are the same weight and have the same fibre orientation, whilst the central ply is in the mirrored fibre orientation and has a weight equal to the total of the two outer plies.

This helps to overcome the typical anti-symmetric laminate stack often found in the shear webs of girders, which can cause cure distortion and affect shear wrinkling.

High Modulus undertook to assess this material for use in high performance yachts. Mechanical tests of in-plane shear, tensile and compressive strength and modulus, as well as a cure distortion study, were carried out on laminates manufactured from the traditional two-ply (asymmetric) carbon double bias fabric and the new three-ply HexForce NC2 In-ply Symmetric CDB400 fabric. In all areas, the three-ply HexForceNC2 In-ply Symmetric reinforcement’s performance was superior to the traditional two-ply asymmetric material.
