Hexcel’s aircraft noise absorption product, HexWeb Acousti-Cap, has won the JEC Group’s “Award Winning Innovation” 2007 competition in the Aeronautics category.

The award will be presented to Hexcel and its partners, Spirit AeroSystems, Alenia Aermacchi, S.p.A, MRA Systems Inc. and the University of Cincinnati, during the JEC Composites Show in Paris on April 3 during a special ceremony at the Musée d’Orsay.

Hexcel will also be honoured as a partner to Innovation Award Winner Cosmic Carbone Ultimate, a mass-produced bicycle racing wheel made of 100 percent carbon from Mavic (Salomon SA, France) in the Sports & Leisure category. Hexcel was also partner to Innovation Award Finalist Lamborghini Murcièlago roadster engine frame developed by ATR GROUP (Italy) in the automotive category.

“Hexcel has been very honoured by JEC in not just one award-winning category, but in three,” said Hexcel CEO Dave Berges. “We’re very proud of our success and that of our partners. We believe that the jury has acknowledged the contribution that Acousti-Cap will make in the aerospace field where it enables aircraft engine designers to achieve superior acoustical performance, including dramatic noise reduction during take off and landing, without a structural weight penalty. This is a departure from current technology, which requires tradeoffs between weight and noise reduction.’

HexWeb Acousti-Cap consists of a non-metallic permeable cap material embedded into honeycomb core to create an acoustic septum. Hexcel’s customers specify the flow resistance characteristics they want in the product, as well as overall core thickness, numbers of caps in a cell, and insertion depth. The resultant product is an assembly that is tuned to their acoustic requirements thereby reducing some forms of engine noise.
