Glyndwr University’s Advanced Composite Research Centre, part of a pan-Wales £26.8m Advanced Sustainable Manufacturing Technologies project called ASTUTE, has been launched to benefit businesses working in the aerospace, automotive and high value manufacturing industries.
Glyndwr explain that for the first time since the opening of the centre in Hawarden, businesses will be able to tap into the university’s research into developing faster manufacturing and processing techniques for polymer composite materials. ASTUTE is part-funded by the EU’s Convergence European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government.
Mark Gaddes, Senior Project Officer, said “Eight universities across Wales are taking part in ASTUTE and our role here at Glyndwr is to provide specific support for composites. So, this could be helping a company to develop a more sustainable product through using composites, helping to reduce manufacturing costs or cut time to market by adopting composite technologies. The ultimate aim is to increase the competitiveness of SMEs, helping to bring wealth and job creation to the region.”
The project is focused on serving businesses in the Convergence area of Wales, covering counties including Denbighshire, Conwy, Gwynedd, Anglesey, Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire, Carmarthenshire, Swansea, Neath & Port Talbot, Bridgend, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Merthyr Tydfil, Caerphilly, Blaenau Gwent and Torfaen.
Mark added “There is no specific cash requirement for organisations – just a time and materials commitment to work with us to develop potential new processes and products which could increase their competitiveness. Our input could be through consultancy or as part of a collaborative project.”
The Advanced Composite Training and Development Centre opened in Broughton in October 2010 as a partnership between Glyndwr University, Airbus, Deeside College and the Welsh Government.
Glyndwr University explain that they deliver research expertise as part of the partnership which includes rapid prototyping, assembly and recycling of composites, destructive and non-destructive testing and microwave heating.
The ASTUTE project is led by Swansea University, in collaboration with the Universities of Aberystwyth, Bangor, Cardiff, Glyndwr, Swansea Metropolitan, UWIC, and the University of Wales, Newport.
