The global carbon fibre industry is projected to grow to $0.9 billion by the year 2010 according to a new market report by Research and Markets.

The Growth Opportunities in the Carbon Fibre Market 2004-2010 Report analyses the use of carbon fibre in the three main segments of Aerospace, Industrial and Sporting goods.

The report states that it was only in the early 1960s when successful commercial production of carbon fibre started, as the requirements of the aerospace industry for better and lightweight materials became of paramount importance. In recent decades, carbon fibres have found wide applications in commercial and civilian aircraft, along with recreational, industrial, and transportation markets as the price of carbon fibre has come down and technologies have matured.

The global carbon fibre industry is set to grow to $0.9 billion with the market for finished carbon fibre reinforced composites parts is set to grow to $9.9 billion by 2010.

This market report discusses both carbon fibre and carbon fibre reinforced composites market. A significant price war, rapid increase in demand, shortage of materials and increase in new applications are among others.

A total of 15 major players in the carbon fibre business are discussed, with Toho, Toray and Zoltek amongst the key players.
