E6 glass fibre reinforcement has been developed by Gibson Fiberglass to provide improved corrosion resistance and enhanced physical properties.
“The enhanced physical properties of E6 will benefit composite applications with higher strength demands such as wind energy, high pressure pipe, and sucker rods. The improved chemical resistance of E6 will improve the performance of composites used in oil and chemical process equipment as well as high voltage electrical applications,” according to Joe Peng, President of Gibson Fiberglass.
This new material is currently being produced in trial quantities by Jushi/Gibson, who report additional benefits such as a reduced carbon footprint in comparison with traditional E-glass fibre. According to extensive testing conducted by the Science and Technology Group of Jushi, there is a 90% reduction in emissions of nitrogen oxide compounds and an 80% reduction in waste gas emissions. Particulate emissions are also greatly reduced. The enhanced manufacturing process allows for zero waste water discharge, and a significant reduction in process waste glass fibre.
E6 Enhanced Glass Fiber is part of the next generation of reinforcements being developed by Jushi/Gibson. According to company officials, $1.5 Million USD is being spent in 2009 on research and development to improve glass fibre performance in thermoset and thermoplastic composite applications.
