Fishing Boat Built in DIAB Composite Material

According to DIAB, a good fishing boat must meet the demands of the fisherman. It has to withstand the rigors of the open sea during the worst conditions. It needs considerable power during the towing operation, yet it has to be economically effective with long range and low fuel spending. It says this fishing boat fulfils all these requirements and more.

DIAB describes M/S Bluefin as the most effective type of vessel to catch aggregating species near the surface. A purse seiner fishes with a net called a seine that is laid out in a circle around a school of fish and drawn into a purse that closes the bottom, trapping the catch inside. It says the boat must be very stable since it has to carry a heavy load.

M/S Bluefin is owned by Nye Bluefin AS in Nekkøy, Norway, and was built in 2000 and then extended twice, in 2005 and 2006. In 2013 a decision was made to further extend the boat, adding 7.8 metres mid-ship to increase the hold capacity. The boat was originally designed and constructed by Mundal Boat, a quality provider of commercial vessels established in 1981 in Sæbøvågen, Norway. Mundal Boat also took care of each of the rebuild. The company has been cooperating with DIAB for more than 30 years.

DIAB says the specialty of Mundal Boat is design and construction of large innovative vessels in sandwich composite material. It explains that composite boats are more durable and more economically effective than their wooden or steel-clad counterparts. As wooden and steel-clad boats are much heavier, they cannot reach such a high speed with the same engine. So the first benefit is that the boat uses much less oil for each journey.

In M/S Bluefin, Divinycell core material is used throughout the entire vessel. This, according to Diab, used in conjunction with strong laminate, offers the ideal combination of strength, stiffness and roughness. 

During the latest rebuilding, where all the design and dimensioning were provided by Maritime Engineering, M/S Bluefin was extended with a new middle section using Divinycell core material. Three new cargo holds were added and the total load capacity is now 300 m3. The rebuilt seiner features a new deckhouse on the port side and an extended dayroom. It is now equipped for 11 people and will operate traditional inshore fishing.

We are confident that it will fulfil all our expectations and be a valuable asset for future operations.”
