Fibre Sizings Ideal for Heat Stability and Hydrolytic Resistance Critical Lightweight Automotive Composites

Michelman is introducing a number of new fibre sizings to support advanced generations of engineered resin composites increasingly being used in automotive design and manufacturing applications.

According to Michelman, as lightweight composites replace more and more metal components, requirements for higher thermal resistance, hydrolysis resistance, and mechanical performance are increasing. It describes its new fibre sizing solutions that meet these challenges:

  • Hydrosize U2-04, a water-based polyurethane dispersion that is compatible with polyamide resins, 
  • Hydrosize PA846, a water-based polyamide dispersion that is highly stable and offers excellent thermal resistance, 
  • FGLASS X91 EMA dispersion, a new film former that is compliant with the Commission  Regulation (EU) n°10/2011 repealing directive 2002/72/EC, 
  • Hydrosize U9-01, a water-based, blocked isocyanate that enhances the reactivity of the interface between the fibre and the resin.

Michelman explains that it offers a full line of fibre sizings and lubricants that optimise glass, carbon and natural fibres used in PE, PP, Thermosets, PPS, PA, PC and PET/PBT resin composites by tailoring the surface chemistry of reinforcement fibres to the chemistry of the matrix resin.
