As part of a wide ranging review of its activities and services, Farnborough International Ltd, has been formed to assume responsibility for the running of future air shows.
This new company is a wholly owned subsidiary of the SBAC and falls in line with the SBAC’s strategic review which will allow a dedicated team to focus on Farnborough International as a stand alone business while at the same time ensuring that the SBAC retains overall control of the Farnborough International air show.
Dr Sally Howes, Director General of the SBAC said that “The SBAC is delighted to announce the evolution of the Farnborough International air show. We have listened intently to our Members, Exhibitors and Stakeholders and come up with a proposition that will not only retain our reputation as a premier international aerospace show but enhance our standing amongst the global aerospace community. ”The SBAC and Farnborough International Ltd look forward to building upon the outstanding success of this years’ event.”
The Director of Farnborough International is Colin Way who was previously with Marshall Aerospace and seconded to the SBAC for Farnborough International 2004. Mr Way said: “Farnborough International Ltd will deliver a cost effective show for 2006 that the aerospace community will be truly proud of.”
The Air Show will be preceded by a conference of senior aerospace executives and government representatives on the afternoon of the 17th July, to be followed by the Farnborough dinner, which will be the official opening event of the 2006 show. Details of these and other operational aspects of the 2006 events will be announced early in 2005.
The announcement of a new company to run the show follows recent press speculation that major exhibitors at the show may abandon Farnborough, prompting the strategic review.
SBAC president Kevin Smith, chief executive of GKN, recently said that “We are looking at reconfiguring the show. The shape and size of the show is an issue, as is the fact that it lasts a week, as well as the restrictions on flights. What we have to do is make it more affordable and to improve its cost effectiveness.”
However, it is understood that the strategic review has been in the planning long before this years show in July which made a profit of more than £1, and attracted 130,000 people from the trade and 110,000 members of the paying public.
