EPSRC CIMComp will present new developments in textile and 3D reinforcements including quad-axial braiding, tufting with multifunctional threads, and Augmented Reality (AR) training tools at the Composites Engineering show at The NEC, Birmingham, UK.

CIMComp is currently constructing a proposal in response to the EPSRC ‘Future Manufacturing Research Hub’ call and will look to secure £10M funding to deliver a pipeline of fundamental technologies over the next decade to support the UK Composites Strategy, HVM Catapults and industry. The Centre is looking for industry support for this major venture.

During the show, CIMComp will also chair a forum focusing on its core activities, showcasing the culmination of 4 years of research in the area of composites manufacturing. Entitled “Next-Generation Composite Manufacturing Processes”, the forum will take place on 5th November at 13:00, Forum 3 during the show.

The programme for the forum is as follows:

  • Centre Overview and Multi-Scale Modelling to Support Manufacturing

Professor Andrew Long, CIMComp Director, Dean of Engineering and Professor of Mechanics of Materials, University of Nottingham

  • Design for Manufacture: Advancing Lamination Technologies

Professor Kevin Potter, CIMComp Deputy Director, Professor in Composites Manufacture, University of Bristol

  • Hybrid Composite of Continuous and Random Carbon Fibre Architectures for High Volume Automotive Applications

Nick Warrior, Professor of Mechanical Engineering, The University of Nottingham

  • Understanding and Predicting Defect Generation Mechanisms in Composites

Stephen Hallett, Professor in Composite Structures, University of Bristol

  • Opportunities for Multi-functional Fibre Placement

Costas Soutis, Professor of Aerospace Engineering, The University of Manchester, Director, NW Composites Centre & NCCEF
