BRG Townsend, Inc is in the process of completing its second major multiclient study of the 1.1 million tonne engineering thermoplastics compounding industry in Western Europe. The study, focusing on systems containing a broad range of reinforcements, modifiers, flame-retardants and polymer blends, is based on data derived from over 200 interviews in ten countries.
Preliminary findings show that the industry continues to consolidate with the resin producers and major compounders growing even bigger. This presents opportunities to small specialty compounders who can react quickly to customer needs. Nylon continues to be the dominant polymer matrix at about 50% of the total, while materials such as polypropylene (PP) and polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) are gaining share in selected application areas. The automotive and electronics industries account for over 60% of composite consumption with substantial growth being forecast for the business machine, appliance, telecommunications, consumer and industrial markets. “”Engineering Thermoplastic Compounding Western Europe”” has publication scheduled for August, 2001.
