Electric GT is partnering with Bcomp to replace carbon fibre panels with natural fibre composite parts in its Electric GT racing car.
According to Swiss company Bcomp, its powerRibs and ampliTex reinforcement fabrics contribute to a 500 kg (over 20%) weight reduction in the race-prepared Tesla Model S EGT P100D. The flax fibre technology is also said to allow for increased damping and stiffness compared with carbon composite parts, without increasing weight, and removes risk of shattering in a crash scenario.
Bcomp is also developing LED arrays to be integrated into the panels which will display information on the exterior of the racing car.
“Not only do Bcomp’s revolutionary natural fibre panels give us increased performance in terms of damping and stiffness, Bcomp have also assisted us in achieving a 20% weight saving compared to the road-going production version of this car,” says Electric GT CEO Mark Gemmell. “That is quite staggering.”
“In addition to the performance characteristics these materials offer, we are also working with Bcomp to develop our secret weapon – bespoke LED arrays within the fibre composite panels, so that the cars will have the capability to display key information to the watching crowd and viewers at home,” he adds. “From race numbers to race telemetry, energy levels and even biometric feedback from the drivers, the possibilities are endless and this is just the start of how we bring fans to the heart of the racing action.”

Bcomp unveiled the new technology on 18 November at the Electric GT headquarters at Circuit Pau-Arnos, France. The inaugural Electric GT Championship, said to be the world’s first all-electric production car racing series, will begin in 2018.
